EXPERTISE AREA:
My research has focused on the study of evolutionary genetics of the yellowleg shrimp Farfantepenaeus californiensis, the blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris and Ictalurus catfish, using mitochondrial and genomic DNA analyses. I have also worked  in comparative genomics as a tool to understand evolutionary adaptation in two viruses affecting penaeid shrimps production, Infectious Hypodermal and Hematopoietic Necrosis Virus (IHHNV) and White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV). I´m currently working, on the development of in vitro cell culture systems of Litopenaeus vannamei and Morone saxatilis, to study with third generation sequencing the genetic variability of IHHNV, WSSV, and the Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia Virus (VHSV). The in vitro cell culture would allow investigating the infective process of these virus (study of the replication mechanisms, assesment of the cytopathological response, and other studies)
