DOMAINE D’EXPERTISE :
My academic journey commenced with a Ph.D. in Biomedicine and Biotechnology, with a specialization in microbiology, at the University of Valencia (UV) in Spain. This was possible through funding from an FPI Grant from the Ministry of Spain. At the research line « Pathogens of Interest in Aquaculture, » I embarked on a ground-breaking doctoral thesis titled « Transcriptomic analysis on the host-pathogen relationship of Vibrio vulnificus« . This research was driven by a dual objective: unveiling the major virulence factors employed by the zoonotic bacterial fish pathogen V. vulnificus to infect the European eel and understanding how the eel mounts an effective immune response to combat the disease. In parallel, I carried out a project to unveil how global warming modulates this foodborne pathogen virulence. I continued my research journey at UV, serving as a postdoctoral fellow for almost two years. During this period, I develped and implemmented a qPCR protocol for the detection and quantification of V. parahaemolyticus in water and shrimp samples. Additionally, I established an infection model for Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND) in shrimp. These protocols were subsequently employed to assess the efficacy of phytobiotic-enriched diets in safeguarding shrimps against AHPND. During my short postdoctoral tenure at UV, I also actively contributed to other projects related to health issues in aquaculture, particularly those concerning the fish emerging pathogen V. harveyi.

From January 2022 tp May 2024, I have worked as postdoctoral researcher at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland). During this period, I continued working on host-microbe interactions but shifted my focus towards understanding the molecular mechanisms underlaying the interplay of the small intestinal  microbiome with inflammation and nutrient absorption in malnutrition context. I believe that the work developed during my postdoc in Lausanne showcases my adaptability in research and has contributed to a deeper comprehension of how microbial communities impact human gastrointestinal health, which can be relevant in the context of foodborne pathogens’ infections. My relentless commitment to the study of aquatic emerging pathogens, mostly belonging to Vibrio species, with a view to preventing animal diseases and associated risks that these foodborne pathogens pose to public health has culminated in the acquisition of a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship for my last postdoctoral stage. This fellowship have allowed me to join Ifremer in June 2024, where my research will be focused on the emergent pathogen V. aestuarianus, how it is impacted by anthropogenic pollution and climate change and its fatal impact on adult oysters.

Beyond my research activities, I actively engage in teaching tasks for the Universities I have worked in, delivering lessons in various bachelor and master subjects, particularly those related to the Diagnosis and Control of diseases in the aquaculture context. Furthermore, I embraced the role of a science communicator by participating in Science Outreach activities aimed at raising awareness of critical health topics, including bacterial resistance to antibiotics, emerging pathogens under the One Health approach, and the implications of climate change on health.
